Injection Therapies
Therapeutic Injections can be an important part of sports medicine and healing chronic pain. Injection therapies have evolved from the work of many doctors in both Europe and the Americas.
Trigger Point Injections: A trigger point is a spot of “exquisite pain” in a tight muscle. When pressed Trigger points usually have predictable areas of “referred” pain that radiates to another part of the body (pressing on the top of the shoulder makes the back of the eye hurt). Trigger points often evolve in chronically tight muscles and can be the source of a lot of chronic pain. Janet Travel was one of the first doctors to treat trigger points by injecting saline into the points. Following the work of Janet Travel, and adding to the technique of saline injections, current TP injections use local anesthetics and sometimes B-vitamins or homeopathic remedies,. Treatments are surprisingly comfortable and relief from trigger points and their referred pain is often immediate and can last weeks or months. This is a great addition to acupuncture, massage, and physical therapy as it helps to break the spasm cycle.
Neural Scar Therapy: Neural therapy is a German technique that also utilizes injections of local anesthetics to relieve chronic pain. There are two main techniques: scar therapy and nerve blocks. Scar therapy involves injecting local anesthetics along scars to release adhesions and soften the scar. Often this also releases the past emotions, memories or trauma involved in acquiring the scar. Both the release of past emotions and physical adhesions /scar tissue can be very helpful in alleviating chronic pain.
Mesotherapy: Pronounced “mess-o” therapy. Mesotherapy is a French system of pain relief. It is currently the standard of care in France for sports medicine injuries. The technique is also used in the cosmetic field for “surgery free” face lifts, as well as the reduction of cellulite and stubborn fat deposits. Mesotherapy treatments consist of lots of very small, very fast injections that just barely break the skin. The needles used are very small. Treatments can be uncomfortable, but they are brief. Pain relief of 50% or greater is usually experienced after one treatment and can last for a month or more. A series of a few weekly treatments can exponentially speed healing from injuries. Dr. Andrews does not currently use mesotherapy for cosmetic treatments. |
