Check List for International Travel

6 months before trip:

  • Immunizations: Check the CDC travel health website and see what immunizations are recommended for the area you are traveling to. If Hepatitis B is a recommendation, it takes 6 months to complete the series of 3 immunizations before you are considered "immunized".
    • Places to get immunizations locally:

3 months before trip:

  • Most common Immunizations when traveling to Tropical or Sub Tropical areas:
    • Hepatitis A (very strongly recommended)
    • Hepatitis B (very strongly recommended)
    • Tetanus / Diptheria (very strongly recommended)
    • Typhoid (very strongly recommended)
    • Yellow fever (strongly recommended)
    • Meningitis (consider)
    • Rabies (consider)
    • Measles (recommended)
    • Polio (strongly recommended)
  • Plane Tickets (1-3 months ahead for better fare)
  • Passport (45 - 60 days minimum)
  • Arrange pet care, house sitting, work coverage if necessary

2 months before trip:

  • Apply for Visa (2 weeks, requires sending in passport)

1 month before trip:

  • Register with Embassies (online)
  • Review Packing list and do any shopping necessary (include time for orders to arrive)

3 weeks before trip:

  • Obtain Travel Insurance if you decide you need it
  • Obtain any Rx items
    • (some malaria meds need to be started 1-2 weeks prior to travel)

2 weeks before trip:

  • Local Shopping, Errands, Confirm house and pet sitters
  • Make arrangements with friends / family to deposit emergency funds into bank

1 week before trip:

  • Last minute shopping
  • Pack (see Packing list)
  • Label all luggage with DESTINATION address
  • Inform bank & credit card companies that you will be traveling (to prevent blocks on charges from foreign countries)
  • Make copies of:
    • passport (front page and visa page)
    • plane ticket
    • traveler’s checks (or record serial numbers)
    • drivers license
    • credit cards (include back of card so you have cancellation numbers)
    • banking information
  • Make note of phone numbers for:
    • US Embassy
    • Credit card companies (in case cards are stolen)
    • Name of Local contact, address and phone of where you are staying. You will need this information ON THE PLANE to fill out customs forms and to get thru customs in your destination country.
